Tasting notes: Blackcurrants, blackberries & raisins
Gachatha is a washed coffee from Nyeri, Kenya, produced by several hundred smallholders who deliver cherries to the Gachatha wet mill. Most farmers grow the traditional SL28 and SL34 cultivars, alongside newer Ruiru 11 and Batian plantings. The cooperative supports its members with agricultural training, a demonstration plot and seedlings for both coffee and shade trees.
The cherries are hand sorted, depulped and graded by density before the parchment is dry fermented overnight for about 12 to 16 hours. After washing and another grading, the coffee is dried on raised tables for roughly 10 to 14 days. The cup shows the intense fruit character associated with Nyeri, with blackcurrant, blackberry and raisin flavours in a clean, expressive profile.
