Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky grew out of a bad day at the distillery. On October 22, 1910, a fire stopped the bottling line. A batch of mature whisky was ready to go, so it was moved into fresh barrels to wait. That accidental second aging is what this bottle recreates.
Today, fully aged Old Forester goes into a second barrel at 100 proof. That barrel is lightly toasted and then charred almost to the point of burning. The lower entry proof pulls extra wood sugars into the spirit. It is bottled at 93 proof, or 46.5% ABV. It was the fourth and final release in the Whiskey Row Series.
The nose is rich and dessert-like. You will find buttercream, sticky toffee and baked apple, plus a hint of roasted coffee bean. The palate is smooth and well rounded. It tastes like a sweet oatmeal raisin cookie, then warms up with cinnamon, nutmeg and mocha. The finish is thick at first but turns slightly dry. Gentle spice and smoky charred oak stay with you.
Judges like it too. It took a Gold Medal at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Ultimate Spirits Challenge scored it 93 points.
Try it neat first so you catch every layer. A single large cube is nice on a warm night. It also makes a deep, sweet Old Fashioned or Manhattan. Pair it with dark chocolate, smoked meats or a slice of pecan pie. If you enjoy rich, dessert-leaning bourbon, this one belongs on your shelf.
