Linie Aquavit is a remarkable Scandinavian spirit that stands apart for its maritime heritage, elegant spice‐forward character, and smooth finish. It offers a refined, memorable sipping experience—whether enjoyed straight or in an inventive cocktail.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Born in Norway, Linie Aquavit is crafted using a potato‐based distillate blended with a distinctive mix of Nordic herbs and spices, prominently including caraway and star anise. After distillation, the aquavit is matured in Oloroso sherry oak casks and then embarked on a sea voyage—crossing the equator twice—before final bottling. This unique process of ocean travel, temperature fluctuation, and barrel movement is claimed to deepen the spirit’s complexity and smoothness.
Critics Reviews
Professional reviewers consistently highlight the unique ageing voyage and its influence on flavour. One tasting featured in a major culinary magazine described Linie as “richly aromatic with a strong caraway and anise backbone, mellowed by sherry oak and maritime influence” and noted its growing popularity in craft cocktail circles thanks to its bold spice profile. Another reviewer emphasised the sea-matured cask story as a key differentiator: “You can taste the voyage—vanilla, oak, sea air and subtle herbs create a spirit with both depth and intrigue.”
Tasting Profile
Nose: Clear amber glow; aromas of fresh caraway seed, star anise, orange peel, light vanilla and subtle sherry oak.
Palate: Smooth entry with firm spice of caraway and anise, complemented by toasted oak, gentle vanilla sweetness and a faint maritime saline note.
Finish: Medium to long; dry oak, lingering anise/licorice hint, and a warming mineral undertone—balanced rather than intense, inviting another sip.
