Kōloa Kaua'i White Rum. Kōloa Rum Company, Kalaheo, Kaua'i, Hawai'i — twice-distilled from pure Hawaiian cane sugar in a vintage 1,210-gallon steam-powered copper pot still, cut with pristine rainwater from Mount Wai'ale'ale, and bottled as the purest expression of the Kōloa house style: dry, crisp, and genuinely made in Hawai'i.
Kaua'i is where Hawai'i's commercial sugar industry was born. The town of Kōloa saw the islands' first successful commercial sugar plantation in 1835, and local legend holds that rum production followed quietly within a few years of the first harvest in 1837. Kōloa Rum Company carries that heritage forward as the first and only licensed rum distillery on the island, founded in 2009, distilling everything on-site in Kalaheo from pure Hawaiian cane sugar and rainwater filtered through volcanic strata beneath Mount Wai'ale'ale — one of the wettest places on earth.
The White Rum is the foundation of the Kōloa range — the clearest window into what the distillery's vintage copper pot still produces when there is nothing in the way. Twice-distilled in batch style, cut with volcanic rainwater, and bottled without caramel, sugar additions, or any additives, it delivers a character that sets it apart from neutral grain-spirit-based white rums: there is genuine cane sweetness, a hint of oak from the still, and a clean pineapple-forward finish that is unmistakably Hawaiian.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Clean and inviting with hints of oak, licorice, and toasted sugars. Fresh and pure, with a light tropical fruit quality from the Hawaiian cane sugar base.
- Palate: Dry and crisp — lighter than many white rums but with genuine character from the copper pot still. The cane sugar sweetness comes through naturally without being cloying.
- Finish: Fruity pineapple finish, clean and inviting. Short and refreshing — designed for cocktail use where purity and clean integration matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Kōloa White Rum taste like? Clean and dry with hints of oak, licorice, and toasted sugars on the nose. Crisp on the palate with natural cane sweetness. A fruity pineapple finish that is clean and refreshing.
- Is Kōloa White Rum actually made in Hawaii? Yes — all distilling, blending, and bottling is done at Kōloa Rum Company's distillery in Kalaheo, Kaua'i, using local Hawaiian cane sugar and volcanic rainwater from Mount Wai'ale'ale. It is the first and only licensed rum distillery on the island.
- How does Kōloa White compare to standard white rum brands? Most commercial white rums use a neutral grain spirit base with minimal character. Kōloa White is distilled from pure cane sugar in a copper pot still — the result is more character, more genuine sweetness, and a cleaner, more interesting profile than most neutral white rums at this price point.
- What cocktails work best with Kōloa White Rum? Daiquiri, Mojito, Mai Tai, and any classic that calls for a light or white rum. Its clean pineapple finish and copper pot distillation character make it more interesting in simple drinks than neutral white rums.
- What is the history of rum in Kaua'i? Kōloa was the site of Hawai'i's first successful commercial sugar plantation in 1835. By 1837 the first harvest produced two tons of raw sugar, and local stories say rum production began soon after. Kōloa Rum Company revives that heritage as the island's first licensed distillery.
