When Joe Phelps arrived in Napa Valley in the early 1970s, the area was still a quiet agricultural community just beginning its turn toward fine wine. He brought a builder's mindset to the project, laying the practical groundwork for a winery from the ground up. In 1974 he settled on an idea that would define the estate: each year, assemble a single blend that captured the very best fruit the vintage had to offer. He made no promise that the wine would always be Cabernet Sauvignon — the only requirement was that it represent Joseph Phelps Vineyards at its peak. That wine became Insignia, long held as a reference point for California winemaking.
Fifty years and three generations later, the team continues along the path Joe set, with the same attention to winemaking, hospitality, and sustainable practices across the vineyards and cellars that help protect the region they call home. This Napa Valley 2021 bottling comes in a 750 ml format at 14.5% ABV, with a balanced profile, a smooth texture, and quiet details that speak to the care behind it.
