This iconic champagne is the flagship cuvée of Maison Mumm, located in Reims, France. Founded in 1827, the house achieved global fame under Georges Hermann Mumm, who in 1876 decided to decorate the bottles with a red silk ribbon. This "Cordon Rouge" was a tribute to the Grand Cordon de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest civilian distinction, and has since become an enduring symbol of the house's motto: "Nec plus ultra" (Only the best). Today, Mumm is one of the largest champagne producers in the world and a leader in sustainable viticulture, having implemented a zero-herbicide policy across its estate in 2020.
Wine Description
G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge is a Pinot Noir-forward champagne, typically blended from over 100 different crus to ensure a consistent house style. It presents a clear, pale golden-yellow hue with jade reflections and a delicate stream of fine bubbles. The nose is fresh and complex, featuring aromas of ripe peach, apricot, and tropical notes (pineapple and lychee), layered with rich autolytic scents of brioche, toasted bread, and praline. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and well-balanced, showcasing a powerful fruit structure and a creamy texture. It is characterized by a "nerve" or tension from cleansing grapefruit acidity and a long, savory finish with hints of caramel and honey. This non-vintage Brut typically consists of 45% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 25% Pinot Meunier, with an ABV of 12.5%.
