Dirty Laundry Merlot originates from Canada, within the Okanagan Valley region and the Summerland subregion of British Columbia. Originally established as Scherzinger Vineyards in 1978, the property was purchased in the early 2000s by a partnership led by Bob Campbell and Neil MacGillivray, who rebranded the winery to reflect local folklore. The name 'Dirty Laundry' pays homage to a 19th-century Chinese laundry in Summerland that famously fronted for a gambling den and brothel. The winery focuses on crafting approachable, award-winning wines while maintaining a playful and unpretentious philosophy centered on fun and accessibility.
Wine Description
This red wine presents a deep and brilliant garnet red colour in the glass. The sensory profile is rich and expressive, featuring a nose of black cherry, plum, and raspberry, often accompanied by complex notes of dried rosemary, dark chocolate, and tobacco. On the medium-to-full-bodied palate, it delivers vibrant flavours of black currant, mocha, and blackberry, balanced by a medium-high tannin structure and subtle hints of cedar and barrel spice. The finish is smooth and very dry, with lingering notes of chocolate, spice, and savoury leather.
Varietal Composition: 100% Merlot.
ABV: Typically ranges from 13.5% to 14.7% depending on the vintage.
Organic Status: While the winery emphasizes sustainable practices and a non-interventionist winemaking approach, this specific wine is not typically certified organic.
Stylistic Notes: A classic example of British Columbia Merlot, often aged in a combination of French and American oak for up to 18 months to achieve a bold and structured profile.
Food Pairing
The bold dark fruit flavours and structured tannins of this Merlot make it an ideal companion for hearty meat dishes and savoury vegetarian fare. Suggested pairings include roast beef with all the fixings, rib-eye steak, braised lamb shanks, or game meats such as bison burgers and elk tenderloin. It also complements smoked meats, sharp cheddar, or Gorgonzola cheese. For vegetarian options, consider a mushroom risotto with grilled asparagus or salty-sweet sweet potato fries.
