DAOU Vineyards, also called Daou Family Estates, makes this full-bodied red wine. It is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Small amounts of other grapes join it, and the mix changes by vintage. The 2022 adds Petit Verdot, Merlot and a dash of Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from vineyards across Paso Robles, on California's Central Coast. Warm days and cool nights there help build ripe, deep fruit. This 750ml wine is about 14.5% alcohol in 2022.
On the nose, you get black cherry, cassis and plum, with a hint of sage. The palate is rich and full of dark fruit. Think black cherry, boysenberry and blackberry. Notes of cocoa, espresso and baking spice follow. The tannins are smooth and fine. They give the wine a velvety shape. It ages in French oak, which adds structure and warmth.
It pairs well with grilled ribeye, lamb or a hearty mushroom dish. Critics like it too. The 2022 earned 91 points from Wine Enthusiast and 93 from Vinous. It is easy to find and a great example of Paso Robles Cabernet.
