Czechvar Dark Lager (known as Budweiser Budvar Tmavy Ležák in Europe) is a world-renowned dark lager from the state-owned Budějovický Budvar brewery in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. While the name "Czechvar" is used in North America due to trademark disputes, the liquid is the authentic, historic dark lager of Bohemia. It is often cited as one of the finest examples of a Schwarzbier or Czech Dark Lager ($Tmavé$), offering a complex, roasty profile while maintaining the legendary drinkability of a Czech pilsner.
Beer Description
This dark lager pours a stunning, deep ebony-brown with ruby-red highlights when held to the light. It is topped with a thick, persistent, tan-colored creamy head.
Aroma: It features a rich and layered nose. Expect dominant notes of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate, balanced by a subtle sweetness of caramel and toasted hazelnuts. Unlike a stout, the aroma remains "clean" and crisp, with a faint floral hint from traditional Saaz hops.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a remarkably smooth, velvety mouthfeel. It leads with a gentle sweetness of dark malt and molasses, which quickly transitions into a roasted bitterness. The finish is surprisingly dry and refreshing, with none of the heavy, syrupy aftertaste often found in darker ales.
Profile: It has an ABV of 4.7% and a moderate bitterness of 24 IBU, making it incredibly sessionable despite its dark appearance.
Technical Notes: The secret to its depth lies in the use of four different types of malt: Pale, Munich, Caramel, and Roasted. It is brewed using the same soft artesian water and whole-cone Saaz hops as the original Pale Lager, and it undergoes a long, cold lagering process (often up to 90 days) to achieve its signature balance and refinement.
