Corazón Añejo comes from Casa San Matías, a family-owned agave estate in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco. The tequila is made from 100% blue Weber agave grown on the estate. Only ripe hearts are picked for roasting.
After pressing and fermentation, the juice is distilled twice. A small dose of oxygen goes in after the second distillation. The maker says this softens the spirit. It then rests in American oak for well over a year before bottling.
Pour a glass and you will see a deep amber gold. The nose brings vanilla and light caramel over cooked agave and oak, with a sweet floral touch. The palate feels round and medium to full. Caramel and vanilla lead, then agave and a little spice. The finish is smooth and of medium length, with sweet oak spice.
Corazón Añejo took gold at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition in 2018 and again in 2019. It was also named Best Añejo Tequila at the 2016 World Drinks Awards.
Enjoy it neat or over one big ice cube. It also makes a smooth añejo Old Fashioned. Try it with grilled steak, spicy Mexican dishes or a square of dark chocolate. At this price it is an easy way into aged tequila.
