Bruno Schueller runs Domaine Gérard Schueller & Fils from Husseren-les-Châteaux, a small village in the Haut-Rhin, south of Colmar. His Sylvaner comes from the Rebgarten parcel around Husseren, planted on the limestone-rich slopes at the foot of the Vosges. The domaine covers 10 hectares farmed along biodynamic lines without formal certification, with no synthetic treatments and minimal intervention in the cellar.
The 2018 vintage in Alsace was shaped by record rainfall in the first half of the year, which replenished soil water reserves ahead of a warm, dry summer. Sylvaner was among the varieties that performed especially well that year, delivering wines with good ripeness and healthy fruit. Bruno ferments with indigenous yeasts, opens up for malolactic fermentation, and ages in old Alsatian foudres without topping up. All wines leave the cellar without fining or filtration.
Sylvaner is a naturally high-acid variety that, when yields are controlled and the site is right, acts as a precise mirror for its terroir. On limestone soils in Alsace it tends toward citrus, pear, and subtle herbal notes with a mineral undercurrent. At Schueller, the combination of low-intervention winemaking and biodynamic farming amplifies that mineral tension rather than softening it.
Bruno is a founding member of the so-called Gang of Five, a group of Alsatian producers credited with pioneering natural winemaking in the region. His wines do not always conform to appellation sensory standards and sometimes don't pass INAO taste panels, a fact that does not concern him. The Sylvaner is bottled under the Alsace AOC.
