The A.J. Fernandez Last Call Maduro Corticas takes the original Last Call idea and concentrates it into a short, substantial 4" x 52 format. Last Call began as a cigar Fernandez kept for guests at his home in Nicaragua, often bringing them out toward the end of an evening. The Maduro takes that casual after-hours concept in a darker direction, replacing the Habano Rosado wrapper with a Pennsylvania Broadleaf over an all-Nicaraguan core.
The squat proportions of the Corticas make for an interesting expression of the blend. There's enough ring gauge to give the Nicaraguan filler some weight, while the short length keeps the Broadleaf character close at hand. Expect a rich, tobacco-forward profile built around earth, cocoa and a measured pepperiness, with the wrapper contributing a subtle dark sweetness. It's a compact cigar with considerably more depth than its size might suggest, but without trying to overwhelm the palate.
The Corticas is exactly what Last Call was originally meant to be: a satisfying cigar when there isn't time—or perhaps the need—for another Toro. Its 4 x 52 dimensions deliver plenty of tobacco without requiring a long commitment. Keep a few in the humidor for after dinner, late evenings or any occasion when time is short but a small cigar simply won't do.
